The ceramic balls fitted to these bearings are superior Grade 5 Si3N4 loose bearings , which are super slippery and made to tolerances far on and above any chrome steel ball.
Properties and technology mean there really is no substitute for bearings, and when coupled with their light weight mean they are truly the only choice for bicycle applications.
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) Series: A new material suitable for applications where high loads, high speeds and extreme temperatures are factors. Long life and the need for minimum lubrication makes this material perfect for harsh conditions. Si3N4 is anti-magnetic. Maximum useful temperature is 2552°F.
Carbontec use Si3N4...because of the properties the balls needs less lubrication than zirconia, under the same conditions for friction free smooth rotation
To put it into perspective, these bearings, are both stronger and last between 10 to 20 times longer than a normal steel ball, meaning they are replaced less often, give a slick anti friction rotation, and when stacked up to their relative cost, give excellent value for money.
